I hate WordPress.
I’ve hated WordPress for years.
It’s old and bloated the same way the Apache httpd project is old and bloated. The 5-minute install is bullshit unless you have the entire process scripted.
The editor (Gutenberg) is now complete shit. (I didn’t realize this until today)
So, why use it? It’s familiar, and I didn’t feel like fighting with fucking Ghost or Moveable Type or any of the thousand git-backed platforms. Git is also linked to me, and that goes against the rules.
As much as I loathe it now, WordPress is also one of the reasons I have the career I have. I used to write often. I’ve had multiple blogs over the years. I’ve retired them all though. I had an obsession with making my blogs as fast as possible without using CloudFlare or CloudFront. I might’ve used CloudFront. It’s been too long.
Anyway.
I was constantly looking for ways to improve site performance. I started with simple stuff, like removing as many remote elements as I could. Then came tweaking nginx, php, MySQL, the bloody kernel for crying out loud.
Before Linux, I was a Windows admin. Running WordPress on Windows back in those days was difficult, if not impossible. Linux was easier and fascinated me. After a few years of having a Windows job with a Linux hobby, I now have an entire career focused around Linux and haven’t touched a Windows server in almost a decade.
I learned a lot about Linux because of WordPress, and for that, I guess you could say I’m appreciative.
